Transferring a domain from Easyhosting

You can transfer your Easyhosting domain to a different register at any time, if you prefer to.

Transfer your domain from Easyhosting

While we hope you will never feel you need to, you can transfer your Easyhosting domains to another register. This may be more convenient if you are hosting your domain with a different host. Whatever the reason may be, you can easily transfer your Easyhosting domain to whoever you wish.

Before starting your transfer

There are a few things that you will need to do before you initiate the domain transfer. This will help ensure that your transfer is completed successfully the first time, without any issues.

  • Ensure your contact information is up to date
  • Unlock the domain
  • Remove domain privacy
  • Retrieve your transfer code (EPP)

You will need to access your Easyhosting Portal to check and update most of these steps. You can find out how to access your Easyhosting Portal here.

Once logged into your Easyhosting Portal, proceed to the Domain Manager.

Domain Contact Information

The most important thing to check before transferring your domain is ensuring that your contact information is up to date, especially your domain email address. Your email address will be used to verify the transfer by both the new and old registrar. If your email address is not up to date, the transfer will fail.

But, before we discuss updating your domain contact information, there is something that we must make clear:

If you update your domain contact email address, your domain will be locked from transfers for 60 days.

This is a safety device required by ICANN to protect domains from theft. This prevents a malicious actor from accessing your account, updating the email address and transferring your domain without your knowledge. Because of this policy, if you are planning on transferring your domain, you will need to plan ahead and ensure your contact information is up to date at least 60 days before you plan to transfer the domain.

You can find out how to update your domain contact information here.

Unlock your Domain

A domain lock, often referred to as “Registrar Lock” or “Transfer Lock,” is a security feature that helps protect your domain name from unauthorized changes, including unauthorized transfer attempts, modifications, or deletions. When a domain is locked, certain actions like transferring the domain to another registrar, updating the registrant contact information, or altering certain domain settings are prohibited without first unlocking the domain.

This feature is crucial for preventing domain hijacking, where an attacker attempts to transfer your domain without your permission. It also safeguards against accidental changes that might affect your domain’s operational stability.

Remove Domain Privacy

Domain privacy, often referred to as WHOIS privacy, is a service that helps protect your personal information from being publicly accessible in the WHOIS database. When you register a domain, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires registrars to collect your contact information, including your name, address, phone number, and email address. This information is then made publicly available through the WHOIS directory, which anyone can search.

Domain privacy works by masking your personal information in the WHOIS directory. Instead of displaying your personal contact details, the registrar’s information or the information of a privacy service provider is shown. Your real information is kept private and protected from the public eye, which helps reduce spam, prevent unsolicited contact, and minimize the risk of identity theft or other malicious activities.

It’s important to note that while your information is hidden from the general public, it is still accessible to the registrar and can be disclosed if required by law or in specific circumstances outlined in the registrar’s privacy policy.

If you have purchased Domain Privacy, you will need to disable it before transferring your domain. You can send a request to dns@easyhosting.com when you are ready to initiate the transfer.

Retrieve your EPP code

Lastly, you will need your domain EPP or transfer code. Your new registrar will need this code to initiate the domain transfer.

A domain EPP code, also known as an Authorization Code, Auth-Code, or transfer code, is a unique string of characters assigned to a domain name by the domain registrar. This code acts as a security measure to prevent unauthorized transfers of the domain to another registrar or owner.

When you want to transfer your domain name to a different registrar, you’ll need to provide this EPP code to the new registrar. The code ensures that only the rightful domain owner can initiate and approve the domain transfer process, adding an extra layer of protection against domain hijacking or unauthorized transfers.

Domain Manager Overview

From any of the tabs in your domain manager, you will see the Transfer Out button in the upper right. Click this to request your EPP code. This code will be sent to your main contact email address. This is the address on the domain contacts, not necessarily the email associated with your Easyhosting account.

Initiate the transfer

Now that your domain is ready for transfer, you can share your EPP code with your new registrar to initiate the process. Be sure to monitor the contact email address associated with your domain, as you might receive a verification request to approve the transfer. Failing to verify this request will result in the transfer being unsuccessful.

The domain transfer typically takes 5-7 business days to complete. You’ll receive a notification email from your new registrar once the transfer is finalized. While your domain will continue to operate normally during the transfer period, you may be unable to update the name servers or renew the domain until the transfer is fully processed.
